Carve it up…

It was our annual pumpkin carving night. I wait as long as possible to carve them so our pumpkins don’t get sunken or mushy. It’s a pet peeve of mine. The Princess is frequently chagrined because I dump them into the trash the morning after Halloween. I hate driving past people’s homes the week or two after Halloween and seeing sad, nasty, rotten, deflated pumpkins lining their sidewalks.

Littlebit was overjoyed to dig our her pumpkin “guts” even after proclaiming “yuck!” a few times. She happily threw a few handfuls to the floor for the dog’s enjoyment–yes our dog (and least year our baby) eats raw pumpkin guts.

The Princess cleaned out her guts and designed her face and I threw in a little bit of creativity all my own.

Of course, we saved the seeds and they’re now roasting in the oven. I used this easy to follow recipe from all recipes, We have five more whole pumpkins outside and if I find time tomorrow, I might carve a few more for fun and to have seeds for sugar and spice roasted seeds. Of course, I’ll include some in the Princesses lunch tomorrow to build upon our Halloween theme.

Holidays….

This is my favorite time of year….

pumpkins

Not Halloween so much, but the fact that excitement of the holiday season is beginning. I am giddy thinking about the possibilities and the fun we can have. The cookies we have to bake and the decorating we get to do. I’m so excited about the crafts we’ll make and the places we’ll go. It’s literally enough to make me jump out of my chair RIGHT NOW in excitement and anticipation, but I can’t.

What I can do is spend some time focusing on what I’d like to do and narrowing down the list. I’ve learned from Christmases past that I just can’t do everything, so I need to decide what things are the most important and go from there.

So, what things are making my list this year?
Making this awesome non-traditional Advent Calendar. Naturally it started life as a Martha Stewart creation, but I like the idea of being able to tuck a little something inside and am thankful Ali shared the Christmas prompts she was using on her website.

Getting to the Brookfield Zoo’s Holiday Magic event. It’s been on my to-do list for years, but this time I actually wrote it in on the calendar so we make it a point to go.

Visiting Santa Claus at the tiny hut beside the train station near the town we live in. Santa sits in a posh, ornate red chair in front of a fire place. Last year we went the weekend before Christmas and there was no line. The trees outside were decorated so beautifully and it seemed just the sort of place you’d find Santa tucked into, reading before his Christmas Eve journey

The Princess insists on checking in with Norad’s Santa Tracker. It never fails to get an excited to kid to sleep on Christmas Eve as we point out when Santa is visiting the cities of relatives the next state over.

Making sure to watch The Family Man with Big Daddy. It’s a nicely done story set at Christmas time and full of reminders about what things we should find the most important. We don’t watch it with the kids, it’s a tradition we only share with each other. I think there is no greater thing than to actually be surrounded with the knowledge of how BLESSED your life is.

If there are things you love to do around the Holiday season, why not pencil them in and give them the same weight you give to trips to the dentist and school assignments.

High School Musical 3: A review

The Princess and I met up with friends today and ventured to the local movie theater to catch “High School Muscial 3: Senior Year”. Release Friday, this is the (obviously) third installment in the High School Musical trilogy, capitalizing on the run away success of the first movie, released in 2006 on the Disney Channel.

We went to a noon showing the theater was about half full, but upon exiting the theater at 2:30, the lobby was quite full of kids wearing High School Musical gear which seemed to indicate a much busier showing.

HSM3

Honestly, I was a bit worried about paying to see the movie. Sequels usually aren’t very good and “High School Musical 2″ was certainly nothing to write home about (nor pay extra for) so I had pretty low expectations for part 3.

The premise of the movie, obviously, deals with the “Wild Cats” and their last few months of high school. THe movie opens during basketball seasons, slides through prom, the spring “musicale” and graduation. Frankly, the large portion of kids at the movie were young ‘ens. around the Princesses age. The songs are catchy, the romance tame, no slurs, epithets or violence which is appealing, but does the high school experience really translate to the third grade set? I’m not sure.

Overall, the movie was okay. Much better than I anticipated, but my expectations were pretty low. THe musical numbers were very….opulent, which doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I like musicals. I did have a few problems with the movie. Here they go.

Most of the lead characters are in excess of 20 years old, with the exception of the principle leads, Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgins and Corbin Bleu. The actress who plays Taylor McKessie, actress Monique Coleman, is 28 years old.

Dude, she’s MY age.

Also, I have to wonder, though, if we’re setting our kids up for some seriously unrealistic expectations of high school life AND high school relationships. I mean, beyond the winnings spots teams. Troy scales the tree outside of Gabriella’s room to present her with pizza margarita and chocolate strawberries, he drinks hive junker truck over a thousand miles to see her on prom night (and, where are his parents? Who would let their son drive a junker 1000 miles when the damn truck won’t even start up and drive home?). And, in my experience, the idea of cohesion inside the class as shown in HSM is….well….mythical. Admirable, buy mythical.

Overall, I’d take your kids to the movie without concern if they’re fans. The kids seem to like it and it wasn’t totally horrible from my perspective either (but I like “Elf” and “Goonies”, so take my taste in movies as you will). And, it was kind of neat to sit back for a couple of hours and reflect on my high school experience for a little bit…..

Menu Plan Monday on Sunday

MPM

Once again, we grocery shop and therefore menu plan on the weekend, so here’s this menu plan

Asparagus is on sale at many local stores and it’s my and Big Daddy’s FAVORITE veggie, so we’re making hay while the sun shines and eating asparagus this week!

This is sort of my own unvnetion. I pop the roast into the pan with a packet of dry Italian dressing and beer.
