Last year, in the fall, Big Daddy got tired of paying the cable bill. He decided that he wanted to try switching to satellite and so long as I could still DVR my shows (my extensive DVR schedule is another post indeed) I didn’t care. Since we signed up in the fall we got the NFL Season Ticket FOR FREE!
Big Daddy pretty much only watches his favorite teams. He’s not a football fan, per se, but doesn’t mind watching a game on Sunday. We might have turned on the FREE NFL programming a time or two but since we’re not football fans, we didn’t use the service at all.
Fast forward to yesterday evening, Big Daddy and I were having the talk about the budget when we realized that we were being billed for the NFL package through DirecTv to the tune of $42/month. Neither Big Daddy nor I had signed up for the NFL package. We wouldn’t. We don’t watch that much football (hockey, is another story). Big Daddy gets on the phone and called DirecTV to find out why, exactly, we’re being charged for a football package that we haven’t and won’t use.
In June, DirecTv sent a notice with our mailed bill letting us know that unless we declined, they’d be subscribing us for the NFL package this year. Well, Big Daddy set up our bill to play automatically through our bank account. I won’t get into the fact that Big Daddy and I are space cases about paying the bills and just having our set bills pay automatially means that the satellite doesn’t cut off during Blue’s Clues because Big Daddy or I forgot to pay the bill. Since our bill was always paid, Big Daddy and I never opened any statements. We didn’t need more channels, didn’t need special offers and most assuredly didn’t need a Two Hundred and Eighty Nine Dollar football package.
So, Big Daddy gets on the phone and calls DirecTv. Not only do we not want this package, we want our money back (as apparently our bill has been high since August and it took us until October to figure it out. I won’t tell you what that means in regards to how often Big Daddy and I balance our checking account either). Not only will DirecTv not cancel the service, but they won’t refund the money already paid towards this useless, to us, package.
Instead, we get $120 worth of credits (at $20/month for six months) to help ease the Two Hundred and Eighty Nine Dollar sting.
Now, dont misunderstand me. Big Daddy and I had anb obligation to read the fine print AND to open our statements (and you can bet your butt that we’ll be opening every. single. DirecTv statement from now on in), but it seems like a pretty good revenue event for DirecTv doesn’t it? Well, we offer you this for free and then you’re automaticlaly enrolled in our three hundred dollar yearly package! You don’t have to call! We’ll just sign you up.
Yeah…no. We didn’t sign up for DirecTv when we did for the NFL package, but I’m sure people do and I’m sure we’re not the only people missing the YAY! You’re already signed up for LIFE porition of that deal. So, beware. Freebies from DirecTv may not actually be free…..And read your statements!!
Every day, I try to have my chores and daily stuff done so I can use Littlebit’s nap time to be crafty. This afternoon was no exception.
I worked on a skirt for the Princess. I actually got to the waistband stage, and couldn’t find my 1 inch elastic. I’m sure it’s hiding somewhere, so that will go into the “to finish” pile until it turns up.
For instant gratification, I made another pinafore for Littlebit…

Sadly, these aren’t very impressive looking laying flat, so here’s a picture of Littlebit in her Halloween pinafore from the same pattern.

Also, I saw some adorable ghost stuffies on a craft board today and since I KNEW I had what what it took to make it around the house to make my own ghost stuffie, here she is:

Notice her jaunty bow??

Honestly, this would be a GREAT project to make with kids. Let them trace their ghost shape on a double thickness of muslin (or any white cotton fabric. I believe this ghoast was made from white broad cloth). Cut out an oval for the bottom whose diameter is the width of the bottom of your ghost. If you’re going to appliqué the eyes and mouth on like i did, you’ll need to do that first. Then, sew the front of your stuffie to bottom piece, right sides facing and then sew on the back side, again, right sides facing. Stitch up the sides leaving a small hole to stuff and finish off. The possibilities are endless.
Our little ghostie is nestled at the top of our entertainment center, peeking down on all of the goings on in the house. When the Princess is feeling better (she’s home sick with something) she might need to add one to our collection. :o)
100 Days to Christmas is suggesting you get together your Halloween plans today.

Here’s what ours like like.
Thursday, October 23rd-Halloween movie at our library with Littlebit. It’s Max and Ruby’s Perfect Pumpkin. I adore Max and Ruby. Am considering letting Littlebit dress up in costume for this, but am not sure
Saturday, October 24th-Halloween Spooktacular party at Border’s. If you haven’t spent a lot of time taking advantage of programming at your local Borders/Waldenbooks, you REALLY should. They frequently have wonderful, free events for you and your kids. So, check them out. It’s a great way to support a store that is trying to foster a sense of community.
Tuesday, October 28th-Littlebit and I will be hosting a Halloween themed playdate at our house. We’re encouraging our little friends to wear their costumes and we’ll sign some songs, have some treats and make a craft
Thursday, October 30th we will carve our pumpkins. I wait to the last minute to do this, folks, as there’s nothing I hate more than nasty, mushy pumpkins.
Friday, we’ll start our day with Flap Jack o’lanterns for breakfast and some crispy, mummy skin (bacon). The Princess will have goblin tongue sandwiches for lunch and dinner will be Halloweenie winks (a tradition). Littlebit and I will attend the Library Halloween party and help at the Princess’s Halloween party!
And then, of course, Littlebit and the Princess will head out to the annual Halloween shakedown and hope to gather as much candy as they can. :o)
I know it seems kind of anal to have it all planned out in advance like this, but what it does is ensure that we’ve packed in all the fun we can have. There was a year or two that the Princess and I were hastily carving pumpkins at 2pm on Halloween afternoon and that’s just no fun for anyone. It also allows me to sneak in those extra fun things that the kids love so much (and that don’t take much time or effort, just some advanced planning).
Check out your local library or borders. Check out the community events in your newspaper and get your kids out there!
