Christmas Countdown-5 Weeks to go!

I don’t want to stress you out, but Christmas is coming.  This week is Thanksgiving!

My goal every year is to have a less stressful Christmas season without giving up anything.  I realized that in order to do that, I have to start early, divide my tasks and delegate  where possible.   One thing I’m doing to streamline the Christmas season is by freezing cookie dough in advance.  You can read about my first two cookies here and here.

The past two weeks, I’ve been giving you some helpful hints to try and help you get ready for Christmas without pulling out your hair.  There is no behind, so if you want to catch up with me, please read part 1 and part 2 of this series.

Week 5 To-Do list

1) Hopefully you’ve given some thought to your Christmas cards by now.  If you’re going to mail them and if you intend to order photo cards, it really is time to get that done.  Mailing and printing time will begin to increase as the holidays get closer and it takes time to address, stuff and mail the cards.  If your cards are on their way, consider doing other things to get your cards going.  Verify addresses, write up your lables in word document, order address labels, buy stamps, etc.

2) How’s that gift spread sheet coming?  I’ve already started to shop.  I have more to buy, but my gift ideas are cementing and I’ve begun ordering and buying.  I don’t want to be in the stores buying gifts at ALL the week prior ot Christmas, so getting this done early is important.  If you need to mail gifts, it’s doubly important that you make sure you have the turn around time you need.

3) As you buy gifts, wrap them.  That means if you don’t have wrapping paper, ribbon, gift tags, bows and tape, it’s time to buy that too.   Santa doesn’t put gift tags on presents at our house.  He wraps each girl’s gifts in different paper.  My point?  Don’t forget your santa paper.  Last year I had a mountain of presents to wrap.  I won’t do that again this year.  I don’t find wrapping marathons to be fun at all!

4)If you do advent calendars with your kids, make sure you’ve got what you need.  THe first is coming up quick!  I’ll be sharing my 2010 advent activities with you tomorrow.

5) Pencil in those Christmas activities so you don’t miss out on anything you’d like ot do

6) Consider getting your outdoor decorations up while the weather is still mild and before it gets too cold.

7) Schedule any services you need to have finished before the holidays.  I’ll be calling the carpet cleaner.  Do you need to kennel your dog?  Do you have any reservations to make?  Special orders? It’s time.  Stress free.  Call now.

8) THis week, I’ll be deep cleaning the little girls room and the hall bathroom.  We have some hardware to hang, some windows to clean, some dusting to do and some baseboards to vacuum.

Menu Plan Monday

It’s Thanksgiving week!  The gateway to Christmas!  Quit booing and hissing!  EMBRACE IT!

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I’m writing my Monday menu plans from our last week’s menus.  That way, if we run across a stinker, you won’t be too tempted to make it for your family.  While most of you will be posting menu plans that include a big Turkey dinner on Thursday and left overs Friday, Saturday and probably Sunday this is from last week.   So, no Turkey ideas.  Sorry

Monday

Poor Big Daddy had a work crisis and we didn’t get to eat dinner together.  That’s very, very rare in our household.  We eat dinner as a quintet six days a week.  On the seventh day, Littlebit is with Auntie Awesome

Pumpkin chili with cornbread

(Honestly, the Princess and I were kind of meh on this recipe and Littlebit wouldn’t eat it at all.  Big Daddy said it was reminiscent of Cincinnati chili and it was, but it wasn’t spicy or sweet enough.  So, if you really want a different tasting chili, just make Cincinnati chili and skip this one).

Tuesday

Oven fried chicken, couscous and asparagus

(I just use flour and whatever spices I like.  This makes a REALLy good chicken. It’s extra tasty when you’re using skin on chicken, but it’s even awesome skinless).

Wednesday

Rotisserie chicken, potato salad and grilled veggies

Thursday

We had take out.  The Princess and I watched Paranormal State for hours and Littlebit stayed with Auntie Awesome.

Friday

Pizza night!

Saturday

A special dinner for our second Holiday Family Movie Night.  Check in next Saturday

Sunday

We’ve never had THanksgiving with Big Daddy’s family. I have no idea what they cook, but I know what I like.  This is our just in case meal, meaning just in case they don’t make the things I like, I still get to eat them

Roasted Chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, cranberry sauce, crescent rolls and green bean casserole.

Cookie of the Week

Mexican wedding cakes.

Russian tea cakes.

Snowballs.

Whatever you call them, they’re delicious.  Little powdered sugar covered, walnut filled buttery balls of cookie deliciousness. I think these are my favorite cookies of all.  I think.  It’s like picking my favorite book or favorite song, though, so I might fall in love with a different cookie next week.  It depends.

These cookies are DRY.   They’re not moist.    I would best describe them as tender. I point this out, because some people have noted, on recipe reviews, that these cookies are dry.  Yes, they are.  But they’re supposed to be.

Pictures from me.

*This recipes reccomends pecans.  I never use pecans.  Only walnuts.

Family Holiday Movie Night-Fred Claus

I feel at this point that it would be redundant to tell you about how much I love Christmas.  That’s obvious, right?  And while I keep myself in check and don’t decorate until the week of Thanksgiving, it’s never to early to start partaking in another one of my favorite Christmas activities.

Christmas Movies!

Yes, the DVR will be getting a work out as the Princess and I make sure not to miss the best of the, admittedly, schmaltzy Christmas movies they play on ABC Family and the Hallmark channel.    We have a collection of Christmas movies and cartoons, of course, and to make sure we actually get to watch them this year, I’ve decided to implement a holiday movie night.  As we did with Curious George, we’ve made a craft and had a snack and I’ll be serving a themed dinner as well.

Since the North Pole is cold, we had soup for dinner.  It was hard to decide what kind to make because we’re a fan of so many, but I basically went out to allrecipes.com and made the best rated soup I could find (without digging too far or getting too obsessive).  I did reject Taco soup because, well, the North pole is north of the border.  Not south.  I landed on Delicious Ham and Potato soup. It’s very well reviewed and since it was mostly white (like snow!  Which they have at the North Pole!) I thought it was a good choice.  We really liked it and it was similar in flavor to our favorite soup (which I wrote about here. It takes the number one slot!) without as much fat and calories.  No heavy cream.  No bacon.

While our dessert was baking and the soup was simmering,  the big girls and I made Santa door hangers.

The Princess’s

Littlebit’s for the room she shares with Baby Bee.

(see those tiny hands going for Santa!  That’s why I used craft foam!)

We got the pattern from the door hanger from DLTK.com.  However, I knew that paper door hangers wouldn’t last long, so we bought craft foam from Joann’s.  I also bought foam adhesive that is sold along with the foam.  There were small sheets of sticky dots that adhered the foam.  It worked SO much better than glue.

I used the pattern, cut out the pieces and we traced them onto the foam.  It was simple. (I cut and Littlebit assembled).

But, the Pièce de résistance? The santa cake!  I googled, um, Santa Claus desserts.  I found the original picture at Happy Home Baking and followed her links to the Japanese site. Don’t know how to make chocolate curls?  Oddly enough, you can check out this Youtube video by Redbook for an easy to follow tutorial.

We had to use coconut, however, for Santa’s beard becuase I didn’t find peanut free white chocolate.  That was okay, of course, but if you can use white chocolate I would encourage it!  And you could probably use raspberries if you’re not a fan of strawberries.  It would look cute that way too.

I made and iced the cake and The Princess and Littlebit decorated it with Baby Bee helping.

It was pretty good.  And cute!

I’m really looking forward to sharing my other Holiday themed family movie nights with you, so be sure to check back!

Thankful for Link Love

Thanksgiving is next Thursday. Less than a week away.    In years past, it meant a drive to Northern Michigan and an early Christmas with my Dad, his girlfriend and my siblings.  This year, we’re changing it up a bit, but there is still plenty to be thankful for.

Still looking for fall or Thanksgiving decor?  How about some felt leaves from Made?

The Big Red Kitchen made me want to lick my computer screen with her Thanksgiving Mashed Potatoes recipe

Loving this fruit kabob turkey from Family Fun Magazine.

Check out this collection of edible cornucopias from Be Different, Act Normal

I love these adorable turkey sugar cookies from bee in our bonnet.

This is such a magical time of year.  Take some time to enjoy!
