Family Movie Night-Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

When I was a very little girl, my Grandma took me to the movies to see Snow White. The witch scared me so much it took me 25 years to get over it. I’m still not a fan, but that didn’t stop me from picking Walt Disney’s Snow White for our family movie night.

Want to recreate the fun at home? Here’s what we did:

Dinner
Snow White’s Dwarf Sized Roast Beef Sammies and Happy’s Honey Glazed Carrots

Dessert

The Evil Queen’s Special Apple Turnovers

Did I take pictures?  No.  They’re the mountain dew sauce ones and they’re not only super easy to make but so good you’ll want to push the evil queen off the mountain yourself to get at her apples.

What?

Thanks to Make and Takes, we also made these adorable pipe cleaner and pony bead tiaras!

I used some pipe cleaners we had at home and they really had trouble keeping their shape.  We braided two together, tightly, but to keep them on the girls heads we had to use bobby pins.

Family movies night doesn’t have to be hard to put together or super involved.  Big Daddy was out of town so the girlies and i had a great big girlie fest on Sunday night.  With gas prices sky rocketing, we’re going to be working on making more fun at home.   You can also check out previous Family Movie Night ideas here.

On Marriage

Dear Daughters,

A dozen times or more I’ve sat down at my keyboard and decided to write a small primer on what makes a happy marriage.  It is my hope that each one of you will find your own prince or princess charming to complete your life.  It’s my hope that you’ll walk down the aisle (any aisle, really) toward your beloved as a bride full of hope and happiness for your own golden future.  Just as I did as a bride almost 13 years ago.

How perfect, I thought, to write a little how-to to my girls while I sat “in the trenches”. Big Daddy and I are navigating through what are, statistically, the hardest parts of marriage.  We’re raising young children, but I’m pretty sure Big Daddy still hangs the moon and I want so much to be able to tell my girls how to have just this.  Because this is so worth it.

But now matter how hard I’ve tried to encapsulate our marriage into a few cute talking points, I’ve found I can’t do it.  The words fail.  I find that I don’t have any advice to give.  A few weeks ago, I admitted to Big Daddy that maybe I’m not good at marriage.  I’m just good at marriage to him.  Big Daddy isn’t given to hysterics or histrionics. He doesn’t need to need to prattle on endlessly, in detail, about small things.  Make no mistake, he’s not a man of few words, but his words are measured and logical and rational.

My foil.  My perfect, perfect foil.

During this conversation, Big Daddy suggested that, perhaps, our marriage is so successful because it is not only exactly what we wanted by something we choose every day.

And so, my girls, in a few short sentences, Big Daddy summed up everything I’d been trying to say forever.

A happy marriage is about choice.  Choosing the right partner?  Yes, of course. But it’s so much more than that.  A happy marriage is about choosing that partner with every sunrise and sunset.  With your thoughts and your words and your actions.

It’s about wanting that kiss every morning.  Not just accepting it.  Or tolerating it.  Wanting it.  Choosing it. Not feeling complete until you’ve had it.  It’s about needing that time with your head on their chest at night.  Not accepting it.  Or tolerating it. Wanting it. Choosing it. Missing it when they’re away for the night on business or out late with friends.

It’s about forgiving.  Not to a fault, but human mistakes.  It’s about choosing to not hold a grudge and choosing to be careful with someone who has entrusted their heart into your hands for good keeping. It’s about choosing to be vulnerable, and girls, I know this can be so hard depending on the path you walked to find your person.  Choose not to hide your softness or your weakness.  Choose to let them love you for yours and you love them for theirs.  Choose to believe them when they say you’re pretty.  Choose to believe them when they say love you.  Choose to believe them when they treat you like you hang them moon.  Choose to treat them the same way.

Choose them in the quiet moments. Choose them in the big ones and the loud ones and the crazy ones and the sad ones.  Get up every morning and say to the sun and to the world and to yourself that you’re choosing them today.  It’s simple advice, really.  Just keep choosing each other.  When it’s easy and most importantly, when it isn’t.  It’s the best advice I can give, girls.  Even if it did come from your Dad.

Love,

Mom

Mason Jar Wall Vases

I love Pinterest.  Really.  I know that a lot of people are concerned about copyright infringement, etc, but…um…I’m not.  (I probably should be, but I just can’t worry about everything and it’s tornado season).  I don’t want to get into a 5000 word essay on why I love it.  I just do.

One thing, I try to do is make sure I’m doing more than just pinning.  Not because it makes me feel superior, but because isn’t the point of it all to find things (recipes, crafts, decor, clothes, etc) that you like and actually want to make?

For me?  Yes.  It’s more than just eye-candy. Sunday, I leaked this picture on my facebook page

This super easy project is, of course, a Pinterest find.

The project cost me about three dollars, which was what it cost for me to buy a small, inexpensive silver toned curtain rod so I could get the silver brackets. I had gold at home that i could have re-used, but I wanted silver specifically. I had the mason jars (thanks Dad!) and I used paper wrapped wire to hang the jars (which I already had on hand). I think using the thin gauge metal wire the original pin used would have made the project easier, but I liked the look of my paper wrapped wire better.

I wish the lighting was better in the powder room. It’s a small, interior room and the lighting is sub par.

For now, I’ve been putting fresh flowers in my vases, but in the fall and winter, I could switch to pine cones or candles to warm things up.  These vases would aslo be cute used as storage for toothbrushes, hairbrushes (not together!) or make up brushes if you need storage and not just decor.  The original link also opted to use a recycled jar from spaghetti sauce, which is a great (and cheap) option as well.

Lastly, the jars are very easy to take down, wash and refill.

What have you been creating lately?

Easy One Skillet Risotto AND the Menu Plan

We’re in a bit of a lull right now. Not many weeknight commitments to make things harried. Honestly? I kind of like it, but I know it won’t be long until we’re under the gun again and running and scraping for every second we can find between the end of the school day and bedtime.

My favorite meals to cook are healthy meals that are, essentially, one dish. Everything in one that requires no side dishes or extra vegetables. I don’t really like to cook and serve too many casseroles. I really make a push to cook whole foods and to use products that don’t contain preservatives.

That’s why this dinner is so awesome. It meets all those requirements and has the added bonus of being able to use up leftovers. It can be as simple or as complicated as you like. It’s all up to you.

Easy One Skillet Risotto with Chicken and Veggies

1) Assemble your ingredients.  Remember when I said this could accommodate nearly any ingredient you had on hand?  It’s true.  The night I made this dish, I added the vegetables we had on hand along with some  boneless, skinless chicken.  Fresh vegetables WILL take longer to cook.  As will raw chicken.  You can hurry up the process by using frozen vegetables and precooked vegetables.

2) If you’re using raw chicken, chunk it up into bite sized pieces and cook it through.  The smaller the pieces, the quicker it cooks.  You can season your chicken to taste.  I’m currently having a relationship with Montreal Steak Seasoning.  It’s basic, but delicious.

3) While the chicken cooks, chop up any fresh vegetables.

4) When the chicken is finished (of course, this could be a vegetarian meal as well.  Just omit the chicken and substitute vegetable broth) remove it from the pan.  Swirl in a little bit of olive oil and add vegetables and 1 and 1/3  cup of uncooked risotto.  Cook it for a few minutes until risotto has begun to brown and veggies have begun to brown/soften.

4) Stir in four cups of your choice of broth.  Bring to a boil.  Reduce heat after it boils and cover, cooking for twenty minutes.  As an aside, if you’re using frozen vegetables, you can wait until the last five minutes of cooking time to add them.   This dish is actually very good with some of the frozen vegetables in light sauce like Green Giant makes

5) Once the risotto is cooked, stir in your chicken and stir until chicken has warmed up.

6) Serve.

One pan, one bowl, balanced and healthy AND done in about thirty minutes. Isn’t that great?

The Menu Plan

The weather here has been unseasonable.  That’s the best way to describe it.  After a mild weather, we’re experiencing June temperatures in March.  It means, I’m afraid of what June will REALLY be like.  Thank goodness for a/c.

Monday Thirty Minute One Skillet Risotto (seen above.  Young spring asparagus would be amazing in this dish).

Tuesday Steak on the grill, couscous (another super versatile dish) and corn

Wednesday Grilled hamburgers, potato chips and fire roasted vegetables

Thursday Slow Cooker Corned Beef and Potatoes (NO CABBAGE!)

Friday Date Night.  Thanks to Auntie Awesome.

Saturday It’s Family Movie Night!  I’ll be sharing our dinner, dessert and crafts next Friday.

Sunday Guinness boiled brats, home made potato salad and veggies.  Too good (and too warm) to pass up this favorite).

I guess I got my laptop back. Truth!

One of my most favorite songs right now is Otis by Jay-Z and Kanye West.

There’s some swears in it (written in cursive, apparently). The point behind this little admission is that the post title is loosely taken from that song. I’m not sure I can claim that I have my swagger back (whether I’ve ever had it or whether it’s lost would be up for debate). BUT, my laptop is back.

My laptop, folks.

There’s a lot to talk about.  A lot has happen since my purple power cord eater went south.  Some news.  Some changes.  Some craftiness.  Some projects.  Lots to talk about.

LOTS!

But for now, I’ll leave you with Jay-Z, Kanye and the debate fodder of “does Jamie currently have or has she ever had swagger”.

Enjoy.
